Preparare la montatura e il telescopioPreparing the mount and telescope
For me, the session starts well before the first Light. I try to place the mount as level as possible and point it towards North, then install the head, counterweights, telescope, camera and accessories.
At this stage I also check the cables. It may sound trivial, but once an automated session is running, a cable that pulls or gets caught can become a real problem. I balance both declination and right ascension, then move on to polar alignment.
Allineamento polare e controlli inizialiPolar alignment and initial checks
A good polar alignment is something I try not to neglect. After alignment I point to the target and make a few checks before starting a long sequence.
With ASIAIR, plate solving and Go-To make it much easier to verify the position and correct pointing errors. Before relying on automation, however, I always prefer to check that the framing is actually what I want.
Messa a fuoco e autoguidaFocusing and autoguiding
Before starting the final Light sequence I check the focus. If the temperature changes during the night, I already know that it may need to be checked again.
For guiding, the focal length entered in the software must also match the actual guide scope. My notes point out that after significant setup changes, guide calibration may need to be repeated. This is one of those checks I prefer to make while I am still at the telescope.
Before letting ASIAIR work for hours, I always look at at least one Light. I check framing, focus, stars and histogram and look for obvious problems.
It is a small habit, but I think it is very worthwhile: finding an error after the first exposure is much better than finding it after three hours of imaging.
Dithering: perché lo usoDithering: why I use it
Dithering slightly shifts the framing between exposures. This means noise and small sensor defects do not remain on the same pixels and can be rejected more effectively during stacking.
For me it is also particularly important for walking noise. When a small framing drift is present, dithering helps prevent it from becoming a visible structure in the final image.
Quanto spesso fare ditheringHow often to dither
- 30–60 s: dithering ogni 2–3 frame
- 120–180 s: dithering ogni 1–2 frame
- 300 s e oltre: dithering a ogni frame
I do not think there is one frequency that works in every situation. My notes give this practical indication:
- 30–60 s: dither every 2–3 frames
- 120–180 s: dither every 1–2 frames
- 300 s and longer: dither every frame
An indicative movement of 5–10 pixels is suggested. Again, I do not treat this as a number to copy blindly: the movement has to be large enough to be useful.
Stabilità, assestamento e aggressività della guidaGuiding stability, settling and aggressiveness
After dithering I do not start the next exposure immediately. Guiding first needs to settle. The workflow uses 2.0″ Stability and 5 s Settle Time as an example: the exposure starts when the error is below 2 arcsec and has remained there for at least 5 seconds.
Timeout sets the maximum waiting time. For aggressiveness, my notes give RA 60–80% and DEC 70–100% as references. Values that are too high can cause oscillations, while values that are too low can make corrections too slow.
Automeridian FlipAutomeridian Flip
When the session reaches the meridian, Automeridian Flip allows the mount to change sides and continue the sequence. The parameters include when to stop tracking, when to execute the flip and, if necessary, how to handle guide recalibration.
It is very useful during long sessions, but I consider it something to test beforehand. I would not make the first test on the night when I want to leave everything running unattended.
Riprendere lo stesso soggetto in una seconda notteImaging the same target on a second night
When one session is not enough, returning to the same target is very useful. If the camera has remained in the same position, my notes list three ASIAIR possibilities: recall a previous Light with Go-To, keep the Plan, or use an image in Autorun and perform a new Solve.
This allows me to add integration on a later night without rebuilding everything manually. Naturally, it is best to keep the same optical configuration and avoid unnecessarily changing the camera orientation.
Quando fermarsiWhen to stop
It is not always worth continuing until the last available minute. I look at the quality of the latest frames, the target position, the meridian, approaching dawn and, above all, how much integration I have already collected.
Before closing I also check that I have the required calibration data: Light, Flat, Dark and Dark Flat, when they are part of my workflow. It is a simple check that can prevent discovering the next day that something was forgotten.
Dalla ripresa a PixInsightFrom acquisition to PixInsight
At the end of the night I try not to leave everything in one indistinct folder. The Light frames are organized according to the session and acquisition characteristics, while Flat, Dark and Dark Flat should be clearly identified and kept separate.
From here the next phase begins: calibration, selection, integration and processing in PixInsight. The method I use for this part is described in the PixInsight Workflow already published on the site.
