Dall'osservazione del cielo all'astrofotografia From Observing the Sky to Astrophotography

A brief guide to the main techniques of amateur astronomy and my experience with deep-sky imaging

Amateur astronomers are people who study, observe and photograph the night sky as a hobby. They are not necessarily professional scientists, yet their work can also have scientific value: over the years, amateur astronomers have contributed and continue to contribute to research through observations, images, measurements and reports of astronomical phenomena.

An amateur astronomer's activities can vary considerably, depending mainly on personal interests, available time and equipment. One may begin simply by observing the sky with the naked eye and gradually progress to computer-controlled telescopes and fully automated systems.

Visual observers choose to experience the sky directly through their own eyes, sometimes assisted by binoculars or a telescope eyepiece. It is a very special experience: the light reaching the eye is truly the light emitted or reflected by the observed object, after travelling through space to reach us.

A distant galaxy may appear as a barely perceptible patch of light, while experience can allow the observer to distinguish structures, contrasts and variations in brightness. Observing a planet such as Jupiter through a telescope can also reveal details that change continuously because of the planet's rotation and atmospheric conditions.

Apart from naked-eye observing, faint deep-sky objects can be explored with large Dobsonian telescopes, refractors, catadioptric telescopes, astronomical binoculars and eyepieces of different types.

Despite the arrival and growing accessibility of digital astrophotography and modern Smart Telescopes, the pleasure of purely visual observing remains unique: one is not looking at an image processed by a computer, but trying to perceive the light of the cosmos directly with one's own eyes.

L'astrofotografiaAstrophotography

In astrophotography we can distinguish several approaches. For simplicity, they can be divided into night photography, Milky Way photography, wide-field astrophotography, planetary astrophotography and deep-sky astrophotography. These boundaries are not rigid, and the different techniques often overlap.

I was particularly fascinated by the beauty of the dark skies that can still be found in some areas of the Aosta Valley and Piedmont, and at the same time by images of deep-sky objects such as galaxies, nebulae and star clusters.

That is how I ventured into deep-sky astrophotography. This discipline involves photographing very faint celestial objects through a series of exposures, which are subsequently calibrated and integrated to improve the signal-to-noise ratio.

It is a technique that requires dedicated equipment, a good understanding of the imaging system and some experience in acquisition and processing. Capturing the hidden details and colours of astronomical images requires careful attention to focusing, tracking, exposure, calibration and subsequent processing.

For me, however, the fascination of these objects was simply too strong, and I threw myself into this adventure, even risking buying equipment that I was not yet able to exploit fully. With the help of more experienced friends, I began to achieve my first satisfying results and, above all, to understand just how vast this world really is.

Night photography generally includes landscapes photographed after sunset, often featuring a starry sky, the Milky Way, the Moon or other astronomical elements. It is probably one of the easiest starting points for approaching astronomical photography.

To begin, a camera with manual controls, preferably a DSLR or mirrorless camera, a wide-angle lens and a sturdy tripod are sufficient. No telescope or star tracker is required.

Attrezzatura e impostazioni di baseBasic Equipment and Settings

A camera, a wide-angle lens, a sturdy tripod and, optionally, an intervalometer or remote release are enough to start. A focal length roughly between 14 and 30 mm is very versatile, although the choice mainly depends on the desired composition.

For example, with a Nikon Z6 II and a 14-24 mm lens, 14 mm can be used to include a very large portion of sky and emphasise the Milky Way, while 20-24 mm provides a good compromise between sky and landscape.

Focus should be set manually on the stars before starting the sequence. It is very useful to take a test shot and inspect the stars at 100% magnification: if they are point-like, focus is correct.

Fotografare la Via LatteaPhotographing the Milky Way

Photographing the Milky Way is one of the most fascinating experiences for anyone beginning to photograph the night sky. The basic technique is very similar to night photography.

With the Nikon Z6 II and 14-24 mm lens, 14 mm provides a very wide field, while 20-24 mm gives more importance to the landscape or a foreground element.

These values are only a starting point: under a bright sky it may be necessary to reduce ISO or exposure time, while under a dark sky more aggressive settings may be possible.

Star trails are the characteristic streaks produced by stars during the apparent rotation of the sky. Without a star tracker, they can be created through a long sequence of consecutive exposures.

The images can then be combined using StarStaX or similar software. Including Polaris in the composition produces the characteristic concentric circles.

Fotografare la LunaPhotographing the Moon

The Moon is completely different from deep-sky objects. It is very bright and therefore does not require long exposures.

With a telephoto lens such as a 600 mm, the Moon already appears fairly large on the sensor, although it will not completely fill a full-frame sensor.

The most important point is not to overexpose the lunar surface. Check the histogram and make sure that the brightest areas are not clipped.

It is possible to capture 100-200 consecutive images and later select the sharpest ones for stacking. The Moon progressively moves through the frame, but during a single very short exposure its movement is negligible.

Programmi come AutoStakkert! sono particolarmente adatti all'allineamento e allo stacking lunare. Programs such as AutoStakkert! are particularly suitable for lunar alignment and stacking. PixInsight can then be used for sharpening, contrast, colour and finishing.

Astrofotografia a largo campoWide-Field Astrophotography

As focal length increases, the apparent movement of the stars caused by Earth's rotation becomes increasingly noticeable. There is no universal focal-length threshold: the maximum usable exposure depends on focal length, pixel size, image resolution and how strictly we want the stars to remain point-like.

When longer exposures are required without star trailing, a star tracker can be used. Properly aligned to the celestial pole, it compensates for Earth's rotation during the exposure.

A good star tracker makes it possible to collect more of the faint signal from the Milky Way and photograph large regions of sky containing nebulae, star clusters and other objects.

As focal length increases further, tracking accuracy becomes increasingly important. Around 150-200 mm and beyond, a simple star tracker may not be sufficient to keep stars perfectly round during long exposures.

In such cases, an autoguiding system can become useful, generally consisting of a small guide telescope and a second camera. The guide camera continuously monitors a star and allows the system to correct residual tracking errors.

Fotografare le PerseidiPhotographing the Perseids

The Perseids are one of the most interesting meteor showers to photograph during summer. For a few occasional photographs, a normal camera on a tripod may be sufficient. If we want to photograph the sky for several hours, a star tracker can be very useful even with a wide-angle lens.

It is not necessarily best to point directly at the radiant. Meteor trails generally appear longer farther from the radiant, so it can be interesting to keep it outside the frame or near one of the edges.

The basic principle is simple: the camera should shoot continuously. The more images we collect, the greater the chance of recording one or more meteors.

After a night of imaging we may have hundreds of photographs. There is no need to use all of them. We can manually select the images containing the best meteors and remove frames with unwanted aircraft, satellites or other elements.

An effective composition can be built using a clean base sky and then adding the best selected Perseids. Images with and without meteors can be processed separately and combined in Photoshop, Affinity Photo, GIMP or similar software.

Astrofotografia planetariaPlanetary Astrophotography

Moving to much longer focal lengths brings us into the world of planetary astrophotography. Jupiter, Saturn and Mars, as well as the Moon, are very different subjects from nebulae and galaxies.

The most common technique is Lucky Imaging: instead of taking a few long exposures, thousands of very short frames are captured and the best ones are selected afterwards. Atmospheric turbulence continuously changes image sharpness, and software can select and combine the most favourable frames.

High magnification is achieved with telescopes having substantial focal lengths and, when necessary, Barlow lenses, which increase the effective focal length. For example, a 2× Barlow doubles the focal length: a 1000 mm telescope becomes effectively 2000 mm in focal length.

Planets are much brighter than deep-sky objects. Exposures are therefore normally very short and autoguiding is not required as it is for deep-sky imaging. Good optics, appropriate focal length, a stable mount, a camera capable of acquiring many frames per second, favourable atmospheric conditions and precise focus are instead essential.

At first sight planetary photography may seem easier than deep-sky imaging. In reality, the small apparent size of the planets and the strong influence of atmospheric turbulence often make it difficult to obtain truly detailed images.

Astrofotografia Deep SkyDeep-Sky Astrophotography

And finally we arrive at the technique that has fascinated me the most: deep-sky astrophotography.

Here we enter the world of galaxies, nebulae, star clusters and many other extremely distant and faint objects. With focal lengths ranging from a few hundred millimetres to several thousand, we can photograph very different subjects: from the large Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy to the North America Nebula and much smaller, fainter objects.

Deep-sky imaging requires more complex equipment than ordinary night photography. To use relatively long exposures while keeping stars round, a mount capable of compensating for Earth's rotation is required, often assisted by an autoguiding system.

As focal length increases, even small tracking errors become visible. This is why a guide telescope equipped with a second camera is often used. The system monitors a star and continuously sends corrections to the mount, compensating for residual tracking errors.

There is no single correct exposure time: exposure length depends on the mount, guiding, sky brightness, camera, target and filter being used.

In deep-sky imaging, every small detail of the setup can matter. Good mount balance, accurate polar alignment, precise focusing and proper cable management can make a real difference.

As focal length increases, so do the challenges. A setup that works perfectly at 400-600 mm may reveal its limitations at 1500-2000 mm. The total weight of the equipment also becomes increasingly important.

Pianificare le osservazioniPlanning an Imaging Session

Whatever our interest as amateur astronomers, today we have enormous help available through the Internet and the many astronomy applications. Two tools I find particularly useful are Stellarium and Telescopius.

StellariumStellarium

Stellarium is a free, open-source planetarium that displays the sky as it would appear from a chosen location and time. It is useful for planning observations, checking object positions and studying their movement during the night.

Some deep-sky objects may not be immediately identifiable because their labels are not displayed by default. The settings allow additional catalogues and labels to be enabled. However, increasing these values too much can fill the screen with names and symbols and make the map difficult to read.

TelescopiusTelescopius

Telescopius is an online platform for planning observations and astrophotography. One of its most useful features is the ability to simulate the field of view.

By entering the telescope and camera data, we can check which portion of the sky will fit into the image. This is particularly useful when deciding whether a particular target is suitable for our equipment.

Finalmente si fotografa! Finally, We Take the Picture!

Once the technique has been chosen, the target identified and the equipment prepared, all that remains is to start imaging.

But there is one aspect I consider fundamental: the acquisition process accounts for a huge part of the final result.

Even excellent processing cannot completely compensate for a technically problematic acquisition. A poorly calibrated or processed astronomical image can show excessive noise, gradients, distorted stars and artefacts, and above all much less detail than could have been obtained from a good acquisition.

This is why astrophotography does not end when we press the shutter button. In many ways, that is where it begins. Processing is equally important and includes a huge range of techniques: calibration, integration, noise reduction, colour management, contrast enhancement, detail extraction and much more.

There is no single procedure that works for every image. Each target, setup and imaging condition may require a different approach.

With experience, we learn not only how to capture better images, but also how to recognise which processing techniques are best suited to each image.

And this, at least for me, is one of the most fascinating aspects of astrophotography: every photograph is the result of a journey that begins long before the shutter is pressed and ends only when we decide that the image is finally finished.

E adesso?What's Next?

At this point, all that remains is to begin. The sky is out there and, whatever technique we choose, every session can teach us something new.

In my case, after experimenting with several techniques, I chose to focus mainly on deep-sky astrophotography. It is a much more complex journey than I initially imagined, but that is precisely why it continues to fascinate me.

In the next in-depth article, I will describe my experience with deep-sky imaging in greater detail: from choosing the equipment and preparing the session, through acquisition and calibration, to the final image processing.
